Apex students were very fortunate to have two special visitors this past April: Krista Marie Yu of ABC’s Dr. Ken and motivational speaker Jessica Cox, who spoke to our after school students at P.S. 184 Shuang Wen.

Krista Marie Yu stars in the ABC drama Dr. Ken, playing star Ken Jeong’s daughter, Molly. Krista was also one of the 25 celebrants at our 25th anniversary gala this year. She wanted to come and speak to our Toastmaster students about her career, public speaking and the importance of having a broader view of their future. Our students were able to watch snippets of her acting in Dr. Ken as well and ask questions. In the end, all of our students received Dr. Ken shirts, which they loved!

Our second visitor, Jessica Cox, is a motivational speaker who was born with no arms. She encouraged our after school students to think innovatively, or what she calls, “thinking outside the shoe.” A licensed pilot, an avid surfer and taekwondo champion, Jessica talked to our students about her early struggles and how she did not view herself as a victim of her conditions. After the assembly, a 6th grader said, “You don’t need what others have to be successful.”

Our students had such a great time during these two after school events. Thank you to Krista Marie Yu and Jessica Cox for coming in and inspiring our Apex students!
